I notice a trend… Lol

I am curious as to how the peoples of your nation would view the non-human species that inhabit TEP?

— End quote

Most likely with surprise and shock.

Or disbelief by breaking the fourth wall.

LANGUAGE

Languages “spoken” in you country
Tlabakans lack well developed hearing organs but have sophisticated sight, so they interact primarily in Tlabakan Sign Language. More talented individuals are adept at reading lips, although their inability to hear language results in distorted speaking voices. Non-tlabakan interpreters are not uncommon among dignitaries and embassadors when communicating with other species.

Knowledge of foreign languages
Only among the ruling elite, and even then interpreters are more common.

Facts about your language; speaking distance & directness
As Tlabakan language is sight based, it is spoken comfortably at any distance that vision is not obstructed. The major factor in distance is how private the conversation should be.

NUMBERS

Decimal point
While the number system used in Tlabaka is significant different from the Decimal system, partial numbers are still accounted for, and are set apart by slashes.

Definition of a billion
The Tlabakan number system is extremely inefficient and would take a two page essay to describe the number 1 billion.

System of measurement
Tlabaka has a standard measurement system of imperial, arbitrary measures, although this system is only used by the priveleged upper class. The lower uneducated classes have no standard forms of measure.

How date is written & most important dates
Exact details of history are unimportant to Tlabakans. History is told through elaborate oral traditions and epics.

RACE

Variety of races / attitudes about race & foreigners
The Tlabakan species has a wide range of ethnic diversity, and the nation is also composed of a wide swath of lesser enslaved peoples. Due to unique cultural and eugenic factors, the most politically and economically powerful races of Tlabakans are usually the most physically large and indomitable.

You make jokes about…
Everyone smaller than you. The Tlabakan culture is one of domination and abuse, racism and classism. Belittlements often focus on the size of a given individual’s assets - horns, tusks, scythe claws, and decorate flower arrangements. Intellectualism and creativity is valued at the government level, but a hatred for it is cultivated for it among the masses.

POLITICS

Political parties
There is no politics, there is only the Desafka.

Attitude toward Socialism & Communism
You don’t know what those things are.

Does the government listen to you?
You don’t understand the question.

Can problems be solved?
Probably?

If a politician cheats on his wife…
Monogamy is unusual among the Tlabakans.

Military involvement with government
The military has it’s own structure and is an independent arm of the government, under the Desafka’s rule.

Freedom of speech, patriotism, royalty, changing names, misc.
Speaking ill of an individual above your caste is usually followed by a swift and brutal punishment, up to and including immediate public execution. Patriotism and nationalism is bred from the eggsac, and individuals who break away from this are quickly expunged by their peers without any active action on the government’s part. As long as a Tlabakan stays in their specifically prescribed cultural and social role, they can do whatever they want.

ECONOMICS

Utilities & companies: public or private
Tlabaka strikes a balance between government and privately run businesses. Control is important, but too much regulation and overhead will halt the growth of the nation. The closest thing to a political party are the economists and bureaucrats underneath the Desafka calling for more or less restriction.

Inflation & unemployment
Unemployment is not a concern of the Tlabakan government and is therefore not tracked. Individuals that cannot find means in any lucrative profession are freely welcomed in the meat grinder of the Tlabakan military. A small industry exists for creating fertilizer out of Tlabakans and other lesser species found dead on the streets from exposure.

Taxes
The Desafka knows best how your money should be spent. The average income rate is 70% and growing, with even higher rates for the rich.

Variety of items for sale, haggling
Tlabaka has a vast manufacturing sector which produces an overabundance of cheap, shoddy items to export. Higher quality goods can be found but are only traded among the privileged upper class. Haggling is common, although prices are generally reasonable since cheating someone too badly may provoke a challenge to personal combat.

Credit cards
Heavy regulations by the government make them inferior to traditional loans.

Inheritance
Totally unregulated.

SOCIAL WELFARE

Attitudes toward social security, welfare programs, unemployment payments, medical assistance, charitable aid
The government will take care of you as long as you are useful to the system. If you aren’t creative or educated enough to join another industry, there’s always the military. Charity is an alien concept.

INTERNATIONAL

Knowledge of world capitals & leaders
Superficial knowledge among the privileged upper class. Nonexistent knowledge among the lower classes (they’re lucky if they know the names of surrounding nations).

Attitudes toward the other countries of the East Pacific
(placeholder)

Has your country been conquered?
Tlabaka eats, it is never eaten.

Wars
Yes please.

LAW AND CRIME

Court system & lawsuits
Tlabaka operates on a system of ‘Might makes right’ with the exception of a crime of a lower caste against a higher caste. In either case, courts are at best improvised temporary juries, not permanent fixtures. Grey areas rarely exist in the lives of Tlabakans. Disputes between peers are determined by personal ritual combat.

Bribes
Frequent, encouraged and often necessary for even basic day-to-day functions in all parts of the nation.

Police & gun ownership
Guns are for cowards. Real Tlabakans use their scythe-claws. Crime doesn’t exist because there is very little a Tlabakan can do that would be considered a crime.

Dangerous places
Battlefields. Laboratories. Streets. Parks. The dinner table in your own home. If there are other people around you, there is a non-zero chance you may die in the next hour.

Lawyers
The closest thing to a lawyer are the Tlabakans who write down the Desafka’s edicts.

EDUCATION

History you learned
A mishmash of legends and war stories that blur the lines between myth and reality. There is no official agreement even on what Tlabaka became an official naton. There’s lots of really cool historical figures who killed and enslaved lots of barbarians though.

Cost of school
Education is state-paid if the individual is sponsored by an upper class citizen. It usually involves a lot of talent and/or a lot of bribes.

College
There is no arbitrary division between college and schooling.

EMPLOYMENT

Are you a farmer?
Highly unlikely. You have a decent chance of being an unskilled agrarian laborer though.

Can you be fired?
Absolutely. If you’re lucky you’ll live through it.

Labor day
National holidays do not exist.

Appointments, punctuality, negotiating
Varies per individual and employer.

TRANSPORTATION

Which side of the road / traffic lights / pedestrian safety
Individual cars are uncommon. Subways and light rails are more common, although paved footpaths are the most frequent method of travel. Roads are almost exclusively used for industrial vehicles and function more like freeways. They are extremely unsafe for pedestrians (the deaths of which rarely come with consequences).

Taxis
Too expensive compared to public transportation for the lower classes, and useless to the priveleged with personal shuttles, but a small industry exists for the rare tourist or unusual circumstance.

Quality of public transportation, trains, buses, planes
Local transportation works – most of the time. Are probably unpleasant if you aren’t used to cramped, smelly and generally unpleasant circumstances. The lower classes are. Commercial flights only only for international travel, and as Tlabaka’s tourism industry is abysmal, there is only one airport that can accommodate commercial jets. Personal shuttles are common among the wealthy, however.

RELATIONSHIPS

First names & forms of address
Tlabakans have a single given name, and a clan they are a part of. Given names are only used among peers, and even then only when the distinction is important. In most cases ‘Clansman’ is the default form of address. Different forms of address are used when communicating with an individual above or below one’s caste. The direct translation from TSL to English would be something along the lines of “underling” when addressing a lower caste member, or “overlord” when speaking to one above. The TSL Transliteration Project, however, has been working on a spoken language equivalent to TSL, and they’ve defined the address as ‘Desaf’ when addressing an overlord, and ‘Unsaf’ when addressing a lower class.

Arranged marriages & wedding customs
Monogamy is rarely practiced in Tlabaka, and marriage is not a legal construct.

Importance of family background & social status
Families are dissolved in Tlabakan society, with broods being absorbed into the clan’s ranks. An exception exists for the most privileged Tlabakans, who may track lineage for particularly promising hatchlings. Social status is first and foremost dependent on the ethnicity of the individual, with varying status attributed among ethnic peers based on profession, martial prowess, and general regard.

Preferences of physical appearance
Proper grooming of a Tlabakan clansman involves keeping clean and also managing an impressive garden on one’s back. One’s back-garden is more or less equivalent to the grooming of a human’s hair - creativity is rewarded, but certain social norms and restrictions apply to color and layout based on social status and profession.
Large tusks and horns are highly desirable, and so a market for artificially expanding them is bustling, but highly taboo. Modification of horns is a frequent source of gossip and rumors (true or sufficiently spread) can end careers (and in extreme cases, end lives).

Sexuality & attitudes toward homosexuality
Tlabakans have a seasonal mating period during which females become sexually aggressive. A female in heat vents pheromones that arouse male Tlabakans. Because of the high population turnover of Tlabakans and because there is little additional hindrance to carrying fertilized eggs, sex is common in the mating season and has little in the way of taboo. How a female chooses a male to mate can get rather complicated, and may involve personal combat before mating. Homosexuality is not documented among Tlabakans.

Most Tlabakans do have a ‘hunting’ partner or party, however, which is the most intimate relationship or collection of relationships a Tlabakan frequently has. These relationships are independent of sexual characteristics.

Relations with family / visiting / misc.
Relations with parents are respectful but no more significant than any other clan relationship, when parentage is even known.

AT HOME

Things in your house
Highly variable based on caste. The lowest have little more than a mat to sleep on in communal living quarters. A higher class might own those quarters and live in a mansion in the expansive caverns beneath it. A typical clansman of the sirik caste owns a personal climate-controlled cavern of a few chambers that houses their bed chamber, grooming room and an additional room to house equipment and supplies for their given profession. Luxury goods are mostly relegated to the more privileged, but small amenities do exist even for the lowliest. While Tlabakans do not produce their own network entertainment, Tlabakans do find joy in foreign programming (that is, what the government allows to be broadcast in the nation).

A wealthy Tlabakan may have their own expansive hunting ground, stocked with rare and dangerous animals to either hunt or have fight with slaves or unsaf. Liesure activities are up to the imagination of the wealthiest Tlabakans.

Bathroom
Tlabakans bathe in communal swamp baths, but personal detailing and grooming happens in private grooming chambers in their homes. Grooming rooms often appear as indoor gardens, where specific plants are cultivated for implantation on a Tlabakan’s back. A mirror and tool rack is also standard.

Telephone
Tlabakan cavern networks are outfitted with local communication networks, with consoles availabe in public terminals, or in personal chambers for the better off. Connections to larger networks can be achieved with proper authorization. Mobile communication units are common for those who have use of them.

Climate
Tlabaka’s surface climate is bleak, barren and dangerous. It shows the scars of generations of over-exploitation and neglect. Acid rain ensures that all but the most adaptable plants are obliterated. The only plant common in Tlabaka is the Ul-spore, a non-native plant from the Tlabakan homeworld, which can drastically alter its physiology based on its environment. Clouds of spores are frequent sights in the skies of Tlabaka.

FOOD

Biggest meal of the day
Meals are rarely scheduled. Food is preferably served alive (or at least very fresh), and Tlabakans generally eat several small meals a day. Feasts are for special occasions, and usually follow large elaborate hunting rituals where large beasts are slaughtered and consumed. Preserved processed food does exist, although it is distasteful, and is eaten primarily by the lowest classes. Tlabakans can eat plant matter but they don’t derive as much nutrition from it. They get the most benefit from fruits rather than greens.

What you won’t eat (and odd things you will)
Tlabakans cannot digest most human staples and grains, and are frequently allergic to compounds that are in them. Even so, their cheap production sometimes leads unsavory manufacturers to package preserved food with it as a filler and serve it to the underclasses. The practice is frowned upon and penalized by the government due to its effects on rising healthcare costs.
Tlabakans have no taboo about eating the flesh of other sentient creatures. There is no industry for slaughtering humans, however, since human labor is more valuable than human flesh. There are circles that try to circulate human flesh as a delicacy among the elite, but the abundance of humans makes it a hard sell.
Symbolic cannibalism is occasionally practiced, but a combination of taboo and health concerns generally prevent the consumption of Tlabakan flesh by other Tlabakans.

Insects are the most common lean snack food in Tlabaka, in particular crickets (live ones only, please). Cricket breeding is a major industry and import and you can see cricket bag stands as frequently in Tlabaka as you might see popcorn stands in human nations.

How you eat & local cuisine
Eating in Tlabaka is ideally equal parts sport and sustenance. There are ‘food parks’ where wild animals and plants grow and live freely. Tlabakans pay admission into the park and eat whatever they catch. You must pay extra to bring food out of the park with you. Vendors exist with live caged food for the Tlabakan in a rush. Wealthier individuals own their own food parks, and the poorest must deal with packaged food.
There is a significant overlap in beverages for Tlabakans and humans. Fruit juices are extremely popular, as are their fermented counterparts. Ethenol has a similar physiological effect on Tlabakans as humans. Beer is unpopular because the ingestion of barley and hops have decidedly undesirable effects, but wine and its distilled cousin brandy are common. Most distilled beverages can be consumed as long as impure allergens have been reduced to low enough concentrations.
Tlabakans have a strong physiological reaction to milk and vomit it up. Sweetened carbonated beverages are a treat, as long as they use actual sugar rather than corn syrup or human-created artificial sweeteners.

Fast food & restaurants
Food parks tend to have divergent themes and offerings based on area and price. Another factor to keep in mind when choosing a food-park is the ease with which one can catch your meal. Depending on whether you are more bored or hungry, a challenge may be worth less or more at the time.
Packaged and caged food is always considered inferior, but concessions are made for those with little time or means.

Packaging
Packaged food is usually stored in cheap plastic. Beverages are usually imported from outside of Tlabaka and are therefore indistinguishable from those of other countries.

HEALTH

Quality of healthcare & national health insurance
Healthcare is guaranteed for every Tlabakan in the nation. The quality of said care varies highly based on the status and wealth of the individual receiving it. Bribes tend to make things go even smoother.

Attitudes toward doctors
You have a higher opinion of doctors the wealthier you are, and vice versa.

RELIGION

Major religions & attitudes toward them
Tlabakans are a highly secular and skeptical people. Coupled with their disposition of abuse and bullying, you are better off not openly practicing your faith while inside the nation’s borders.

Relationship between church and state
The government does not subsidize churches and charges tax money accordingly. Otherwise they are left to their own devices.

Christmas & other holidays
Tlabaka has no national holidays.

VACATIONS

Amount of vacation time
Tlabaka has no nationally mandated vacation time.

Topless & nude beaches
There are no restrictions on covering or dress in Tlabaka.

Hotel rooms with private baths
Bathing is a social activity for Tlabakans. Hotels will usually have a communal Swam Bath chamber.

Popular travel destinations & recreational activities
Molloc’s Maw is a metropolitan center of Tlabakan culture and tourism (what little of it there is). Molloc’s Maw, like most Tlabakan cities, is built into the ground. It takes it’s name from the massive spiral open sinkhole, fifteen miles in diameter (and as far anyone knows, bottomless), that it’s built into. From the central pit are innumerable cavern networks of residential, commercial and industrial districts, excavated from the hard rock.

Access to Bokthull’s Crevasse, the nation’s capital, is heavily restricted and heavily fortified.

ARTS

Attitude toward opera, ballet, theatre, etc.
Tlabakans have extremely well-developed larynxes that can create sophisticated elaborate melodies. They have made up for the lack of acute hearing by being able to sing VERY LOUDLY. Opera and theatre organically grew from the intimidating dances that have been used by the Tlabakans for millennia. Tlabakan theatre is notable for displays of brutal murder in the midst of performance, both planned and unplanned.

MOVIES

Dubbing or subtitles?
Subtitles, although there is a growing community of Tlabakan filmmakers who re-enact foreign movies (with predictable results). These are also known for having a spectacular amount of murder in them.

TELEVISION

TV news, newspapers, & print media
Print media is few and far between; digital devices are far more common. A major segment of the news covers big Tlabakan personalities who were murdered by desafs, in the line of duty, or in ritual combat. News is also dominated by nationalist propaganda and war effort reminders.

COMICS
Comics are dominated by (surprise) blood and combat.

SPORTS

Popular sports
Tlabakans are insatiable physical sports fans, and competitions exist for a wide variety of pastimes. Subcultures sprout up and embrace any foreign sport that appears, and mainstream popularity for each wanes and waxes with national trends. Hunting is the primary sport, however, with Gladiator matches coming up to close second.

Types of playing cards used
Dice are much more common than cards. Collectible dice games are common and there are quite a few popular dice games that are common knowledge.

LANGUAGE

Languages spoken in your country
Most people were raised in one of the 3 most common local languages (Lastaukes, Larossian and Lavallon) dependent on ethnic origins. English is taught as second language in the whole country and is used by most people as a common language. It is also the official government language and the one used most in business.

Knowledge of foreign languages
Most people only now their local traditional language and English. However highly educated people tend to know more local languages and of course skilled interpreters are trained for public and private use.

Facts about your language; speaking distance & directness
The three original languages are much alike, but sound and pronunciation, as well as the use of certain words are different. All in all, people find it difficult to understand the other local languages.

NUMBERS
Decimal point
The decimal point is a point.

Definition of a billion
Thousand million is a billion. Thousand billion is a trillion.

System of measurement
Bachtendekuppen uses the metric system.

How date is written & most important dates

Most important date is 18 October 1991, when the Great war between the 3 regions came to an end and Bachtendekuppen was officially founded.

RACE
Variety of races / attitudes about race & foreigners
Although the people from the 3 regions are mostly Caucasian humans and therefore the same race, there are some notable differences. Over the years, the Lavals, who live in the northeast and northwest, have gotten more darker of hair and a more compact figure, probably because of harsher living conditions in the cold and mountainous north. The Larossi are statistically more lighter of hair and have a more narrow long build. The Lastauk are mostly like the Larossi.

You make jokes about…
Jokes are mostly made about the people from other regions in the nation, politics, minorities, celebrities etc…

POLITICS
Political parties
There a four different parties: Democracy&Liberty (D&L) mostly interested in civil rights and economic liberties; GreenLeaves, who are very worried about the climate and the planet; Red Revolution (RR), a very socialist party mostly advocating for lower class incomes, welfare and health issues and lastly, the Bachtendekuppen National Party (BNP) who are seen as somewhat conservative, very liberal on economics and nationalistic about the young nation.
The BNP has the current majority in Parliament and Senate and is the party that has been since the founding of Bachtendekuppen as a nation in 1991, uniting the 3 regions.

Does the government listen to you?
The people are represented in Parliament and Senate. As a fairly new nation and a very broad supported evolution that has been successful, the government is quite interested with the ‘opinions on the street’, even if it was out of pure necessity. Debates in parliament and senate can be very lengthy and not all problems get an immediate response.

Can problems be solved?
Of course. Find the right guy.

If a politician cheats on his wife…
Et Alors?

Military involvement with government
The President is the official head of the army. Politics and the military are separated mostly. Active military involvement can’t be combined with political mandates, but some military leaders went in to politics after the war (end after their service) though.

Freedom of speech, patriotism, royalty, changing names, misc.
Freedom of speech is tightly guarded, patriotism is encouraged, royalty is non-existent but there is some ‘aristocracy’ and changing names can only happen with approval from the Department of Justice.

The private sector forms about 91% of the economy.

Inflation & unemployment
Unemployment is quite low and has not been a problem since the founding of the nation. Inflation is around 2%.

Variety of items for sale, haggling
The variety and quality of items for sale has been going up, together with the economy that has taken off very high. Commerce in Bachtendekuppen is fairly healthy where there are more SuperConglomoMarts per capita than in most of its neighbors. Haggling is not a custom in common stores and shops.

Credit cards
Everyone uses them.

Inheritance
Can be freely drafted and organized with a will, within the regulations of private law. No tax.

SOCIAL WELFARE
Welfare, unemployment help and social equality measures are in place though not very extensive. Basic care is provided but not much.

INTERNATIONAL
Knowledge of world capitals & leaders
Basics are taught in schools.

Attitudes toward the other countries of the East Pacific
Due to the long internal war and affairs, not much attention has gone to the outside world. Bachtendekuppens people are mostly neutral about international affairs and other countries. Recently however interest in regional politics has flared up.

Has your country been conquered?
Never.

Wars
The 3 regions had a long military conflict last century. Bachtendekuppen itself as a nation has never been in a war.

LAW AND CRIME
Court system & lawsuits
Bachtendekuppen has a hierarchical court system consisting of several lower and specialized courts, courts of appeal (1 for each regio) and the High Court of Bachtendekuppen. Precedent doctrine is used. The law is a combination of public acts of parliament and judge made law through precedents, based on the principles of the Constitution and those developed trough case law.

Bribes
Not impossible, but certainly not cheap or safe. Millionaires will not buy a lot of people. Bachtendekuppen’s government is one of the least corruptible governments in The East Pacific.

Police & gun ownership
Gun ownership is regulated but not banned. Only small firearms and hunting rifles though. Police Force and the Bachtendekuppen Army are strictly organized and well-funded.

Dangerous places
What is dangerous?

Labor day
Not existent. Who the (censored) celebrates labor?

Punctuality is greatly appreciated. 10 minutes late can be joked away. Half hour needs a good reason. If longer, family must have died and you had to identify the body. Negotiating is an art in some private sectors and in public/political affairs.

TRANSPORTATION
Which side of the road / traffic lights / pedestrian safety
You drive on the right side. If traffic lights are orange you drive through, if green you stop if you still can, and red is stopping at all costs. Or the police will stop you for a longer period of time. If they see it of course.

Taxis
Good service, try to make their honest living off tourists.

Quality of public transportation, trains, buses, planes
Generally considered acceptable, mostly used in big cities and for intercity travel.

RELATIONSHIPS
First names & forms of address
First names are used for persons who you know well and they know you well, on all informal occasions. ‘Sir’ and last names are for the rather formal ones.

Arranged marriages & wedding customs
Marriages are not arranged and are a right for everyone. (censored)ual orientation, gender, religion and all other differences raised by self-righteous pressure groups are irrelevant.

Bathroom
Okay, I only know about my own bathroom.

Telephone
Everyone got one at home. Everyone got cellphones. Or smartphones, tablets, etc…

Puffins are off limits and eating humans as well. Beyond that, there are always weirdos who eat the weirdest things. Nothing wrong with that, it’s their life.

Attitudes toward doctors
Doctors are highly educated and skilled and regarded as one of the better doctors available. They also have a lot of of diploma’s.

Attitudes toward social security, welfare programs, unemployment payments, medical assistance, charitable aid

Some are a necessity, some require justification; seen as a tool to be used, but only temporarily if possible. Charitable aid is appreciated and tax-deductible.

INTERNATIONAL

Knowledge of world capitals & leaders

Education is well-funded, and geo-political knowledge is commonplace.

Attitudes toward the other countries of the East Pacific

Amicable to countries with a healthy degree of civil and political rights. Neutral towards countries that need improvements in human rights. Authoritarian regimes are tolerated, but never given overt tacit approval. In general, all nations are welcome and open to discourse and diplomacy, but no one is above reproach or suspicion.

Has your country been conquered?

No.
Have a go if you’re hard enough.

Wars

Are a utilitarian necessity at times.

LAW AND CRIME

Court system & lawsuits

Separated into levels by federalism. Lawsuits are judged in the applicable court.

Bribes

The punishment for a conviction of bribery or graft is a fine of an amount not more than three times the monetary equivalent of the thing of value, or imprisonment for not more than fifteen years, or both. Additionally he/she can be disqualified from holding any office of honor, trust, or profit under the Greater Texan government.

Police & gun ownership

Our law enforcement system is small but growing in size and technical skill as advances in the science of crime and policing take place. Gun ownership is not a right that is restricted to citizens. Our compulsory service applies to military or civil positions of public service, and familiarity with and respect for firearms is a cultural staple. The civilian populace has access to small arms such as rifles and pistols, but submachine guns are restricted to police and military members. Assault rifles are not restricted due to only small calibre versions being available to the public.

Dangerous places

The landscape of Greater Texas is somewhat inhospitable. The safety is improving as infrastructure, education, and policing achieve greater density.

Lawyers

The staple of any legal system.

EDUCATION

History you learned

A nuanced view of history, one that isn’t as subject to the effects of propaganda and biased historical narratives.

Cost of school

Public schooling is free, and funding comes from taxes paid by Greater Texas citizens and from the money that lottery sales provide. Private schooling tuition is decided by each private school.

College

Varies, depending upon whether the educational institution is private or public. Loans, scholarships, and grants are available from public and private financing sources. Tuition at public institutions is subject to price ceilings that are adjusted based upon the cost of living index and inflation. Degrees available at associate, bachelor, master, and doctorate levels.

EMPLOYMENT

Are you a farmer?

If you are not a farmer, it is possible that you work the industries and infrastructures that support it. The land of Greater Texas is mostly barren, but our engineers and researchers are working to correct this where possible.

Can you be fired?

Yes, but not without justification.

Labor Day?

Labor Days. March 1 and October 1

Appointments, punctuality, negotiating

Appointments should be maintained, and rescheduled in advance if they are unable to be attended. Punctuality is an expectation, but not viewed as an egress if violated. Negotiating is a skill that a number of Greater Texans engage in. Our citizens have used their apparently uneducated mannerisms and relaxed demeanor to create an unorthodox, but very effective approach to diplomacy.

TRANSPORTATION

Which side of the road / traffic lights / pedestrian safety

The right side. Standard RYG layout. Facilitated by city layouts and the policies of transportation engineers.

Taxis

Require a special license to operate, but are readily available in metropolitan areas.

Quality of public transportation, trains, buses, planes

Public transportation is increasing in efficiency and density as funds are appropriated. Rail networks are being laid for freight and passenger train use. Buses are common in cities or for school systems. Airports and Air Force Bases are not unheard of, but are limited to the hub cities.

RELATIONSHIPS

First names & forms of address

First names are used between peers and those that you are familiar or intimate with. Sir, señor, ma’am, and señora may be used when they are applicable, but the absence of these aren’t a cause for concern. A colloquialism in this regard is to refer to young women as Miss (Their First Name) and is seen as an affectionate title.

Arranged marriages & wedding customs

Arranged marriages are not common, but do take place in Greater Texas. The practice is found amongst various ethnicities, and is often a cultural remnant or ritual of the people who partake in it. The majority of weddings are “self-arranged”, rather than pre-arranged. Wedding customs are often unique to each individual and can be a fusion of many cultures.

Importance of family background & social status

Can certainly result in more opportunities to begin with, but the prevalence of education and a capitalist mindset amongst our citizens has shown that this disparity isn’t an exhaustingly expansive gap between classes.

Preferences of physical appearance

Are unique to each individual.

Sexuality & attitudes toward homosexuality

Sexuality is viewed as both a science and an art amongst Greater Texans. Sexuality in regards to identity is understood to be more than the heteronormative standards that exist in many nations. All citizens of age are allowed to marry any other individual that is also over the age of consent. Homosexuality is not viewed as abnormal or unethical. This extends to pansexuality, bisexuality, demi-sexuality, and asexuality. Transgendered and transsexual individuals are not marginalized by societal pressures to conform, and the protections against discrimination are extended to them.

Relations with family / visiting / misc.

Are unique to each family, and likely shaped by socio-economic status.

Variety of races / attitudes about race & foreigners

Greater Texas has the racial dynamics of a diverse country. Discrimination based upon race is an illegal practice for employees in the public and private sectors. Racial discrimination at a personal level is tempered by the caustic public response to the display. Immigration and foreigners are welcomed with programs transitioning the individual to future citizenship, if desired.

— End quote

Does this apply to non-humans and non organics of TEP as well?

Eventually, yes.

I’m wanting to have a nation where they aren’t familiar with some of the more “fantastic” elements at first and must deal with the challenges that reaching that entails.

Cool. Just be aware that the vast majority of the south of the main continent is non-human.

Culture of Toehold

Arts
Opera and Ballet, and traditional theater are almost completely unknown, but street performances requiring minimal props are well known. There are a few private libraries, mostly connected to higher educational systems or places of worship, most free to the public. It is difficult but not impossible to make a living as an artist, and those that can are well respected. Authors, especially essayists and nonfiction writers, tend to make good money, if only because of the tumultuous political climate.

At Home
Buildings in Toehold are built to strict building codes of survivability and sanitation, and are often subsidized in exchange for military storage. All citizens are required to keep a ‘72 hour bag’, including ammunition and food but not water, with them at all times. The government allows unlimited communication via ‘brick phone’ communicators that are part of every citizen’s gear, but many generally purchase a secondary option. Western-style toilets and bath tubs/showers are generally in separate rooms. Personal electronics tend to be built along rugged, portable lines. Televisions are relatively unheard of.

Comics
Comics, especially satirical or political, are very popular, and are enjoyed by all ages. They appear in almost every format and location, up to and including on the sides of buildings.

Economics
The currency is the Gold Flake, equal to 1/1000 of a Troy Oz. This is almost always given as a small piece of gold inside of a plastic chip. lower denominations are regulated through private banks, and may or may not be taken by the seller. All utilities are private, but with strict rules about accessibility and service for ‘important’ ones. Lack of regulation has caused some industries, such as the Airline industry, to stay away. Most industries, such as railway transportation, have reached a standard (even if it is in some cases de facto) among competitors. The tax rate is generally around 30%. It is almost considered rude not to bargain, and business owners price accordingly. Bartering is not unheard of. The use of ATM and Debit cards is intermittent, but due to the nature of the currency, is generally frowned upon.

Education
The education system of Toehold is private and free through high school, with University schooling being on a merit-based system, which is also free, but extremely difficult to attend. Non-government secondary education is available, but seen as inferior, even if it is the only choice for most who wish to continue their education. This makes for an incredibly competitive scholastic environment, with all of the problems associated with it. Cheating is severely punished, although still not unheard of. Teachers are held in high respect, and it is quite a well paying profession.

Employment
Farming is a large business due to difficulties with land reclamation, and that manual labor is oftentimes much cheaper than equipment. So much of the land of Toehold has been rendered sterile that it is estimated that it will be years, if not decades, before they no longer need to import food. The growing population, relative lack of government regulation, and mineral-rich location has caused several manufacturers to open businesses here. It is not unheard of for somebody to work two or even three full time jobs. Over a quarter of the population works in the public sector, primarily in the military, education, or in one of the social programs.

Food
The biggest meal of the day is in the evenings. For several reasons, almost everything that can be rendered edible is on the menu, usually with nearly lethal levels of caffeine. People generally sit at tables on chairs for their meals, and oftentimes friends or extended family are present - it is rare to eat at your own place every day of the week. Fast food exists, but is rarely the cheapest choice available. Milk is powdered, and labels are written in whatever language will sell the most of the item.

Health
Citizens get free health care through military doctors, although there are private, unlicensed and unregulated practices that offer much faster service. Emergency care is exceptional, although you will be billed for the full amount if the doctor does not deem it a true emergency. Almost all third-world diseases are under control, although with such a large itinerant population that is difficult to achieve. Almost as many people die of heart disease as of old age. Military training accidents affect almost 1% of the population.

International
Due both to the educational system, and the number of refugees in the country, the average citizen of Toehold has an excellent understanding of international and regional affairs. How a foreign country is viewed by the average citizen is often through the lens of those who left that country, however. If you ask four different people their opinions on a foreign country, you’ll get six different responses. With a third of the legislative body being a direct democracy, and another third in the form of a Parliament, this makes foreign affairs sometimes a bit difficult.

Language
English is the official language of the government, with all services rendered in this language. There is a healthy secondary market for interpreters. Most citizens know their native language, with English being a second, or third, language. Unaccented English speakers are prized for their rarity. Citizens of Toehold tend to be rather forthright in their speech.

Law and Crime
Although Toehold has a strong court system, it is preferable to deal with the person (or their kyriarch) rather than go through the complicated legal system. Toehold does not recognize precedents, and so every case must be argued anew, although there are several well-used arguments.

There is a de facto hierarchy in place, in that all citizens must be under the authority of somebody who they name as their kyriarch. For members of the military, it is their commanding officer, and for newborns it is their mother. The kyriarch has responsibilities towards those under their authority, extending across economic, legal, and social lines. In the broadest strokes, it may be said that somebody is your kyriarch if you grant them authority over you, and trust their ability to take responsibility for you should something unfortunate happen. This happens to be a legally recognized position in Toehold. The Tyrant has famously signed ‘The People’ as his kyriarch.

Bribes are virtually nonexistent, police carry nonlethal as well as their usual lethal armament, crime is relatively nonexistent, and lawyers are unlicensed and unregulated.

Numbers
The decimal is a dot in government documents. A billion is a thousand million in government documents. The metric system is used by the government, and by several parts of the private sector. The date is DD/MM/YYYY

Politics
The legislative branch of the national government is comprised of three parts - one, a direct democracy, is one vote per citizen. Hive minds are counted as one citizen. The second third is a Parliamentary system. Every citizen has both a personal vote, and a proxy vote, which they must give to another to exercise. Whoever has the most proxy votes out of everybody in the country has the First Seat, and is the leader of Parliament. This tends to be a well-established position. A new seat is added for every million citizens, with competition being incredibly cutthroat for the newest seats, with people being kicked out of office by a few hundred or a few dozen proxies. Parliamentary Representatives are voted in real time, with seat changes calculated weekly.

The third and most distinctive is the Tyrant. Named in the classical sense of the word, the only requirements for office is that you be a citizen, and that you be in possession, and capable of wearing, a big, ugly crown made out of depleted uranium. The theory, such as it was, suggests that first of all, any person with autocratic urges will attempt the path to the most power the easiest. The counterbalance is that Toehold consists of several million heavily armed left wing nutjobs, who do not take kindly to anything resembling the traditional definition of a tyrant.

The first, and current, holder of this crown is the retired mercenary turned General that successfully led the country in rebellion and reconstruction against an uncaring Emperor, Gen. Christopher Davis. It is widely accepted that the rebellion would have been rapidly crushed were it not for him, and he, more than any other individual, embodies what it means to live the life of Freedom married to Responsibility. The people absolutely adore him, and it can be argued that they have this ridiculous political set up solely to keep this gentleman as close to the center of power as possible.

Race
Every race in The East Pacific is represented, although percentages are difficult to track down at this time, due to the large influx. Most stay with their own cultural/racial subgroup, although this is not a matter of ghetto so much as a matter of convenience. Hate crimes are not tolerated under any circumstance, and are one of the few instances where the government will prosecute a case rather than leave it to the kyriarch.

Relationships
When introductions are made, it is generally polite to use the exact method they were introduced to you as until they state otherwise. Subcultures, of course, follow whatever rules they are most comfortable with. Marriages are generally made for love, and the government offers no bonuses or penalties for marriage, and does not generally keep track of such information. There is a stigma among subcultures as to homosexuality, but only if you are a member of that subgroup, otherwise the government’s stance is that it’s nobody’s business, and they will strictly enforce that rule if needed. It is considered polite to notify somebody days in advance if possible before you head over to a friend’s house.

Religion
The majority of the citizens of Toehold follow some form of Christianity, to the point where the government has elected to spend 10% of its expenditures on Spirituality. The practice of this is that the resources are doled out on a percentage basis, so no one sect or religion is favored. In fact, the fifth largest group who receive funds is a militantly atheistic group who maintains excellent refugee and work assistance programs. The thought of a state sponsored religion beyond this makes half the population terrified and the other half burst into fits of giggles. That members directly equal gold makes for a very ‘competitive market’, but one where service rather than perks is held tantamount. There has been one known case of misuse of state funds by a ministry. The results of that were such that none have attempted to again misappropriate funds.

Social Welfare
All levels of government - and most of the private sector, in one form or another - engage in social welfare programs, primarily to integrate and bootstrap refugees and assist in the prohibitive food costs. Other major sources of welfare include the old and infirm, orphans, and widows, especially war widows. In the current economic state, it is generally felt that if you are able to work and unable to find a job, then that is on you.

Sports
Anything that can be turned into a competition between two or more people has been, including beard growing. Skills of a martial bent take center stage more often than others for national events, due to the nature of their culture.

Transportation
Most private vehicles are illegal, except for a few that meet guidelines for military service vehicles as well. Although most drive on the right side of the road, rules are seen more as a set of guidelines to keep 18-Wheelers out of most people’s bedrooms. Crossing busy streets can sometimes be considered a competitive sport as well. Trains and buses are well maintained, if on the utilitarian side, and will get you where you need to go inexpensively.

Vacations
There is no guaranteed vacation time, and citizens on average take two weeks of vacation a year. The beach, like everywhere else, has no rules on clothing, although private beaches and locations may have specific rules. Hotels generally have private baths, and vacationers tend to go anywhere that’s not Toehold.

You use the good old metric system.

How date is written & most important dates:
First the month (sometimes written in roman numerals), than the day.

The year is either the first or last. Like 2013-01-13 or 01-13-2013

RACE

Variety of races / attitudes about race & foreigners:
There are many different “ethnicity” of the skin in Dragonia and you have no problems with other human races as a people.

Humanoid races when they do visit the country a treated with a slight aloofness until their motives and actions speak for themselves, then there is more of a “friendliness” to the interactions.

You make jokes about…
You mostly tell jokes about politicians, policemen, and tourists.

POLITICS

Political parties:
The Grand Dukes word is the one and only law of the land.

The Council of Lairds is his advisory council.

There are government political/functionaries that facilitate and support this system.

You think multi-party systems are inefficient.

Does the government listen to you?
Yes, unless you are disruptive to society.

Can problems be solved?
Yes.

If a politician cheats on their spouse…
Politicians are held to a higher standard, if they cheat on their spouse, they are publicly censored for the first offense. If they continue, they are fired from office.

Military involvement with government:
Active duty military personnel are barred from public office. The Minister of Defense is always a retired military officer.

Freedom of speech, patriotism, royalty, changing names, misc.:
You have the right to free speech, as long as it is not disruptive and/or demeaning in context.

You are loyal to the Grand Duke and Dragonia as a whole.

You can change your name when you get married, or if you really don’t like your name and the new name is not offensive.

50%

Variety of items for sale, haggling:
Variety is huge, the stores are teaming with items for sale. The only time you haggle is when your at a flea market and such.

Credit cards:
Debit cards are more popular. You don’t like to spend beyond your means which Credit Cards lets you do, which makes you go into debt. But having a Credit Card lets you have a means in an emergency, you just don’t like to use it.

Inheritance:
You can freely make your will out to whoever you wish to, although you must be of sound mind and body. Making out your will to leave everything to your cactus is just wrong. You leave stuff to your family and friends.

SOCIAL WELFARE

Attitudes toward social security, welfare programs, unemployment payments, medical assistance, charitable aid:
You know that Dragonia has a good Social Welfare program, and you know that there are some unfortunate members of society that need it. You work hard so you don’t have to need it.

INTERNATIONAL

Knowledge of world capitals & leaders:
You know most of them, and where they are located on the world map, apart from a few obscure ones.

Attitudes toward the other countries of the East Pacific:
You know your country is friendly with a few nearby neighboring countries, and are currently neutral about the rest.

Has your country been conquered?
No, Dragonia has weathered the storms and threats of would-be conquerors, but you’re damn proud of the fact your country has never been conquered.

Wars:
You think that war is necessary up to a point, it leads to sometimes good changes and advancements. On average though you prefer peace, but you are ready to defend your country at a moments notice.

LAW AND CRIME

Court system & lawsuits:
Your court system is just and incorruptible, there are many checks and balances in the legal process. Lawsuits have to be real and just to be brought to the courts attention. You can’t go out and sue a company because you were to stupid to put the lid on the cup of hot coffee while driving and it spilled in your lap burning you. You would be laughed out of the court if you tried.

Bribes:
Bribery is frowned upon very much. It was quite common over 1500 years ago, but now, if you get caught, you can spend up to 10 years in prison, and the person taking the bribe could spend up to 20 if he/she accepts a bribe.

Police & gun ownership:
Only the Police and the Shadow Dragon (think CIA and MI5) forces can have guns.

Private ownership of guns by Dragonian citizens must have a valid gun permit, like for hunters and private investigators and is strictly regulated.

Any non-permit carrying person who is in possession of a gun, will be arrested, fined and jailed.

EMPLOYMENT

Are you a farmer?
If you live in the rural countryside then more than likely yes or you work at a business that supports farming/ranching.

Can you be fired?
Yes, although you can find a new job.

Labor day:
Labor Day is the first Monday of May.

Appointments, punctuality, negotiating:
Being on time is a rule that you were taught from a young age on. You ask for forgiveness if you are 15 minutes late and apologize profusely if 30 minutes late. One hour is inexcusable.

TRANSPORTATION

Which side of the road / traffic lights / pedestrian safety:
You drive on the right side. You stop at the red light no matter what, and the pedestrians can safely cross the road.

Taxis:
Tourist like your taxis, they are always helpful in getting you where you need to go in a timely and safe way.

Quality of public transportation, trains, buses, planes:
Are kept clean and are always as punctual as they can, they are widely used, since getting around the cities is easier than trying it in cars.

The high speed raised mag-lev Bullet Trains are the best way to travel across the country, planes are affordable and usually only used when traveling to other parts of the region or other places on Urth.

RELATIONSHIPS

First names & forms of address:
At official places you call everyone on his or her surname and always put Mr/Ms before it. Otherwise you can call those you know well on their first names.

If your workplace is not an office, you can call your colleagues on their first names. Students often use others surname, there is no problem with that. Calling a teacher on his or her first name is impolite and disrespectful.

Arranged marriages & wedding customs:
“Officially,” there are no arranged marriages. You must register the marriage at the courts. A Church of Dragonia wedding is a beautiful and spiritual union between the couple getting married.

“Officially” you have only one spouse at a time.

“Unofficially,” the government looks at the genetics of the Dragonian people and finds the best matches for the Eugenics program it has been running for the past 1500 years.

“Unofficially,” you can have “Companions” that are part of your household with your spouses consent.

Importance of family background & social status:
“Officially,” there is no “real” type of family background or social status.

“Unofficially” if your family has been part of a military family for generations. Or if your family is part of or has became part of the Eugenics program. Then you are considered “favored”. (The military families have been part of the Eugenics program from the inception of it.)

Preferences of physical appearance:
You believe strongly that people must look and be healthy.

A very thin person or an obese person is not considered good looking.

Physically fit people are more attractive in your eyes.

You exercise on a regular scheduled, for a healthy body leads to a healthy mind and lifestyle.

Sexuality & attitudes toward homosexuality:
You are very open about sex and sexuality, you don’t hide from the topic. Although having sex in public is wrong to do.

When a male and/or a female reach the age of 15 they are considered “legal consenting adults”.

Public nudity is excepted, the vast majority of Dragonians are physically fit and healthy individuals, who are not ashamed of being seen sans clothing.

Pornography is frowned upon and widely discouraged, but it still exists.

Sex with a minor is considered rape and is punished accordingly.

Homosexuality and Bisexuality has been widely excepted throughout Dragonian history and nobody considers either to be wrong.

Relations with family / visiting / misc.:
Family is open to each other, showing up is fine. Friends can usually show up, but it is more polite to call ahead or be invited over.

AT HOME

Home:
First and for-most your place of residence is as environmentally friendly as you can make it. Your home is built to last, it is a sturdy shelter, be it a house or an apartment building, it’s built to be as survivable a home as can be. If you have a yard with your home, you usually have a small vegetable garden. If you live in an apartment, you have a “window garden” most likely.

Things in your house:
You have a telephone, a TV, a radio, a computer, your own bathroom. You do your laundry at home, and you have central heating/air.

Bathroom:
You either have a bath or a shower or both! The toilet is usually in a separate area of the bathroom that is enclosed or semi-enclosed off.

Telephone:
Getting a new land-line phone is routine, and it will work. Getting a cellphone is as easy as going to a store that sells them and buying it.
Coverage for cellphones is great, but out in the wilderness, it is spotty at best unless you have a satellite phone.

Climate:
The climate is a mix, depending on where you are in the country. On the northern coast it is tropical. Mild winters are quite common in the Moonstone mountains to the south-east, while the summers are warm but not to hot or rainy. (I was thinking of the many different climate/regions of New Zealand is how Dragonia’s climate is.)

FOOD

Biggest meal of the day:
Is around noon.

What you won’t eat (and odd things you will):
No matter what, you don’t eat dogs or cats; unless it is a matter of survival.

How you eat & local cuisine:
You eat sitting kneeling or cross-legged on a pad at a low table.

You are eating healthy foods, and fish and poultry are a common staple in your diet.

You stay way from high fat and greasy foods.

Your country is very health conscious.

Fast food & restaurants:
The “fast food” type places are cheap and required to be healthy. The same goes for the sit-down restaurants.

Packaging:
Mustard comes in glass jars, milk in glass jars that are returnable and reused after a thorough cleansing. Recycling is mandatory and packaging takes that into consideration.

Major religions & attitudes toward them:
You believe that the Mother-creator is “Gaia” or “Mother Nature” or even “Mother Urth”, and you strive to live in harmony with the land you live on.

Relationship between church and state:
The government and the church are to remain separate. Druids are here for your spiritual health, not to dictate how you live your life. The only time the Druids will interfere with the state is when the environment is in jeopardy of being despoiled.

Christmas & other holidays:
There is no ‘Christmas’ it is called “Yule”. There are the Summer and Winter Solstice Festivals, as well as the Spring and Fall Equinox Festivals. New Year eve/day is part of the “yuletide” season.

VACATIONS

Amount of vacation time:
You get three weeks of vacation a year.

Topless & nude beaches:
You find that there is nothing wrong going around topless at beaches, nor nothing wrong with nudity in general, be it at the beach or at home.

Hotel rooms with private baths:
In the cities, rooms have a private bath. At bed-n-breakfasts you usually have to share baths.

Popular travel destinations & recreational activities:
Usually when you go on vacation, you travel to Azlanta on the Barrior Isles for some fun in the sun and sand, as well as the casinos.

If you want to get away and “back to nature” you go up to the Druidic wilderness preserve of Moondeep.

Traveling abroad can be expensive but not difficult either by plane or boat.

ARTS

Attitude toward opera, ballet, theater, etc.:
Plays are quite popular, they provide good entertainment.

Opera and ballet are well received in Dragonia as well.

LANGUAGE

Languages spoken in your country
All native Kohlandians speak Thursian, the language of Queen Eothria, who united Kohlandia in 647 AD. All immigrants who apply for citizenship are required to demonstrate a basic knowledge of Thursian but there is a great deal of debate in the press over just how many applicants actuall can speak Thursian and how many just get a friend or relative to take the test for them.

Knowledge of foreign languages
English is taught in schools from age 5 and up; while other languages are taught as optional qualifications from age 12 onwards. Despite regular lessons, many Kohlandians leave school without a working knowledge of any foreign languages (and the press love to suggest that they have little to no knowledge of Thursian, too).

Facts about your language; speaking distance & directness
How comfortable you are standing close to a person depends more on where you grew up than anything else, and it varies wildly across the country.

NUMBERS

Decimal point
The decimal point is a full stop. Spaces are used between blocks of three numbers.

Definition of a billion
Million: 1 000 000
Milliad: 1 000 000 000
Billion: 1 000 000 000 000
Billiad: 1 000 000 000 000 000
Trillion: 1 000 000 000 000 000 000
Trilliad: 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 000

System of measurement
Kohlandia officially moved over to the metric system when the Republic constitution was adopted in 1886. Despite this, there are still areas of the country that insist on using the “imperial” measurement system. There is a pressure group - The Coalition for Equal Measures - which lobbies the Government for dual measurements on all packaging.

How date is written & most important dates
Kohlandia uses the Day-Month-Year dating system and the Gregorian calendar. Weeks start on a Monday.

RACE

Variety of races / attitudes about race & foreigners
Kohlandia is historically a human country, although there have been people of other races in Kohlandia since at least the 8th century; particularly in the Cuthria area, which has a large felinoid population. Most people get along regardless of race but it’s by no means guaranteed that you won’t run into an idiot from time to time.

You make jokes about…
The weather. The government. The fact that the post office could replace its postmen with snails and nobody would notice. The lack of decent TV shows these days.

POLITICS

Political parties
There are seven large parties in the Kohlandian Parliament, but only three are widely regarded as big enough to form a government on their own:

The Lancean Party is the oldest party, and has a reputation as being full of aged, stuck-in-the-past, rich landowners who don’t care about the “average person”. Despite this, they have won more elections than any other party in the nation’s history. Their name comes from the fact that they were originally formed by a group of Lancers in the People’s Army that forced King Harold VI to sign the Parliament Act in 1502 (and thus the party can trace its history right back to the founding of Parliament itself).

Republic Workers Party is the largest party by number of members. Formed during the revolutionary war of 1878 to 1885, the party’s name relates to it originally being the political wing of the Republican Revolutionary Workers Army. When they are not in power, chances are good that the RWP is forming the official Opposition in Parliament.

The Liberal-Green Alliance is the traditional “third option” in Parliament. It hasn’t formed a government of its own since 1982 but did have an alliance with the RWP from 1990 to 1998 which kept the Lanceans from forming a minority Government.

Attitude toward Socialism & Communism
One of the three major Parliamentary parties is Socialist but the country as a whole is democratic.

Does the government listen to you?
The general attitude is “it doesn’t matter who you vote for, they are all bastards”.

Can problems be solved?
Yes but it will probably take a lot of time and effort.

If a politician cheats on his wife…
Then Tim McFallon will be printing a story about it in The Detective, probably alongside a “witty” cartoon.

Military involvement with government
The military has a long-standing tradition of involvement with the Goverment, having been integral in the formation of Parliament and the toppling of the monarchy during the revolutionary war. The current President is a former member of the Air Force. Despite this, Parliament attempts to distance itself from active military involvement whenever possible.

Freedom of speech, patriotism, royalty, changing names, misc.
All citizens are free, up to a point. School children are taught the old saying “your right to swing your fist ends when it hits my nose”.

ECONOMICS

Utilities & companies
Private ownership is a strongly-guarded right. Companies have legal rights of their own and may hold property. Corporate sponsorship and invplvement in politics is widely despised by the populace, but it continues to happen anyway.

Inflation & unemployment
Inflation is kept as low as possible but still happens and everyone agrees there is too much of it. The same goes for unemployment.

Taxes
Income tax is currently at 23%. Some argue that it’s too high, others that it’s too low. It goes up and down all the time, with the result being that noboby can remember how much tax they are supposed to be paying. As a result, most companies deduct tax automatically on behalf of their employees, while all self-employed people have an annual panic when their tax returns are due.

Variety of items for sale, haggling
There is a vast range of options for just about everything and haggling is reserved for small market stalls.

Credit cards
Everyone has one. Everyone hates them. Nobody wants to pay the interest rates they charge, but everyone does anyway.

Inheritance
Your will is your own business, but anything valued over a statuory “capital gains level” will incur taxation.

SOCIAL WELFARE

There is a reasonable social welfare system in place. The RWP argue that it isn’t big enough, while the Lanceans argue that it’s far too big and encourages people not to work.

INTERNATIONAL

Knowledge of world capitals & leaders
Most Kohlandians will know the capitals of their regional neighbours, along with the other major capitals of the world. Just don’t ask them to point to most countries on a map, or ask them who’s in charge. The government is working on improving education (Honest!).

Attitudes toward the other countries of the East Pacific
The general consensus is that TEP is a lovely place full of lovely people, and a really nice place to visit.

Has your country been conquered?
Four times in the last 2000 years. Officially, the last time was in 1404 and it lasted for 216 years. Unofficially, the Straethan region of Cuthria was occupied by enemy forces for six weeks in 1978 before the army took the place back.

Wars
Kohlandia prefers peace to war, but that’s never stopped us getting involved. In fact, Kohlandian armed forces have been in a constant state of war somewhere in the world for the last 28 years.

The last full-scale war involving the country was the “Five Year War” of 1974-79, during which time the country was under near-constant bombardment. Kohlandia was part of the coalition that won, but only because the other side surrendered first.

LAW AND CRIME

Court system & lawsuits
Kohlandians are universally regarded as a highly litigious bunch but the truth is, most people will live their entire lives without getting involved with a lawsuit. Lawyers are incredibly expensive and generally regarded as money-grubbing parasites with large wallets and no morals.

There are three types of court in Kohlandia: Civil (for contract law, wills, etc), Criminal (for dealing with the stuff the media loves to write about) and Ecclesiastical (because the Church used to be really powerful in Kohlandia and nobody has gotten around to fully absorbing the few remnants of Church Law into the Civil system yet).

Bribes
If you’re going to bribe, for goodness’ sake don’t get caught. It’s illegal, it’s immoral and you’ll be all over the front page of the papers.

Police & gun ownership
Guns are outlawed but the legislation is flaky at best. As a result, lots of people still own guns but don’t take them out of the house.

Dangerous places
The countryside is mostly safe. The cities are mostly safe, as long as you avoid the city centre around pub closing time and you don’t go near any of the “sink estates” that house the really rough citizenry.

Lawyers
There are too many lawyers and you probably think they are all self-serving bastards, but when you need help you’ll be straight on the phone to one.

EDUCATION

History you learned
There is a strong emphasis on Kohlandian history from the first year of school onward. The history of other nations is taught to some extent, but it barely gets past “The Egyptians, The Greeks, The Romans and the World Wars” unless you choose to study history as a preferred subject.

Cost of school
School is free, and mandatory up to age 16.

College
College lasts two years (usually 16-18 years of age, although some start later). Most college graduates then enter employment, but there is a growing proportion who are chosing to then go on to a 3- or 4-year University course.

EMPLOYMENT

Are you a farmer?
Probably not. Farming is a dwindling industry because of modern technological advancements that have seen the majority of agriculture taken over by large businesses.

Can you be fired?
Yes, and you probably will be. Employment laws are improving but continue to be inadequate.

Labor day
What day?

Appointments, punctuality, negotiating
Do. Not. Be. Late. Kohlandians hate people who are late.

When negotiating, be incredibly polite and then mutter about the other person when they are gone. It’s the Kohlandian way.

TRANSPORTATION

Which side of the road / traffic lights / pedestrian safety
You drive on the left. Traffic lights are enforced by cameras and anyone who jumps a red light is fined plus they get points on their licence. If you are caught jumping two lights in the same week, you can lose your licence.

Pedestrian safety is pretty good, with many walkways and pedestrian crossings available in cities. In the countryside, you’re either perfectly safe or you take your life in your own hands trying to cross the road. It really depends on how much attention the Governor is paying to road safety.

Taxis
Taxis are reasonably cheap, reasonably clean and reasonably honest.

Quality of public transportation, trains, buses, planes
Busses are clean on a morning, and filthy by the evening. They are sometimes on time but you will rarely have to wait more than half an hour for one, unless you live somewhere remote.

We have trains. That’s about as much as anyone wants to talk about them.

RELATIONSHIPS

First names & forms of address
Everyone is “Mr X” or “Mrs X” unless you are asked to call them by their first name; which most people will do pretty quickly upon you meeting them.

Arranged marriages & wedding customs
Arranged marriages have been illegal since the 19th century but still happen in some areas. Wedding customs vary depending on the region but most weddings are small, family affairs.

Importance of family background & social status
People say Kohlandia is a “classless society” but they will almost immediately follow that with a laugh. There are three classes: working class, middle class and upper class. You won’t find many people claiming to be “Upper class” since the Revolution, but there are still some around who cling to the title. They mostly live in the capital and drive obnoxiously-coloured sports cars.

Preferences of physical appearance
Thin is good. Beautiful is good. Magazines pressure people to look perfect. The media thinks this is a real problem and lambasts the government for not doing enough to counter it. The same media continues to plaster images of unhealthily-thin women and ruggedly handsome men everywhere.

Sexuality & attitudes toward homosexuality
Sex and sexuality is a private matter. Officially, there is equality for the sexes and equality for all sexualities. Unofficially, there are websites that will give you “List of places to not go when gay”. Homophobic crimes are treated more harshly than regular crimes by the police but the problem is still there.

Relations with family / visiting / misc.
Family relationships vary from family to family.

AT HOME

Things in your house
Kohlandians think a TV, DVD player and computer are basic household appliances.

Bathroom
Bath, shower, sink and toilet are usually in the same room. The size of the room is a good indicator of your social status.

Telephone
Home telephones are becoming rare, because everyone and their dog has a mobile phone.

Climate
Variable. Very variable. It can be pouring with rain one day, and beautifully sunny the next. Someone drew a “tourist information” poster saying “Come to Kohlandia” and featuring a guy wearing sandals, shorts and a raincoat while standing in a puddle. Everyone laughed.

FOOD

Biggest meal of the day
Traditionally it is eaten at 6pm. Nowadays? It’s probably ordered from a takeaway while you watch the 8 O’Clock news.

What you won’t eat (and odd things you will)
Kohlandians turn their noses up at eating cats, dogs, pigeons or horses. The Cuthrian region has a traditional delicacy called Sembat, which is a kind of honey caek full of sweet-tasting insects common to the region. Unless you’re brought up on them from childhood, even a native Kohlandian will turn their nose up at it these days.

How you eat & local cuisine
Local cuisine is basic, but filling. Traditional meals feature few herbs and spices. All meals are traditionally eaten around a table, but nowadays you’re just as likely to find people resting their plates on their knees while they sit in front of their televisions.

Fast food & restaurants
They are everywhere, and they vary in price, quality and healthiness (from “pretty healthy” to “russian roulette”).

Packaging
If it’s not in a plastic tube, it’s in a jar, a can or a carboard box. Plastic is being phased out due to an emphasis on recycling, however.

HEALTH

Quality of healthcare & national health insurance
There is universal healthcare but its quality varies from region to region.

Attitudes toward doctors
Doctors get more respect than lawyers, but people still think a good Google search is better than the average consultation.

RELIGION

Major religions & attitudes toward them
Officially, Kohlandia has had no state religion since the Revolution. Unofficially, you’ll hear a lot of people shouting “this is a Christian country” when matters of religion arise.

Relationship between church and state
The church used to be a major part of state affairs. Now it officially has no place, but there are still remnants of Ecclesiastical Law to be dealt with.

Christmas & other holidays
The major holidays are Christmas (celebrated on 25 December) and Freedom Day (celebrated 5 May).

VACATIONS

Amount of vacation time
You probably get 2-3 weeks’ paid vacation per year, plus 18 “national holdays” a year. Plus Christmas Day and Freedom Day.

Topless & nude beaches
Some beaches are topless, some beaches are nude. They are clearly signposted. It is illegal to go nude or topless on any other beaches.

However, there is no law against toplessness or nudity anywhere else in the country; although the police have the ability to arrest anyone who causes a “breach of the peace”, so if someone starts complaining you should probably cover up.

Hotel rooms with private baths
Most hotels have en suite facilities, but not all do.

Popular travel destinations & recreational activities
The Kohl river is a very popular tourist destination because of the Flotilla; a set of recreation historical vessels from the stone age to modern sail boats.

Other destinations include the four Palaces (one large palace in each of the three major regions of the country, plus Mellor Palace in the capital city, Dunhallow. Since the revolution, these have all been open to the public and are now all museums.

You may also like to visit Winter Hill, the largest mountain in Kohlandia. It was first climbed in 1704 and is now one of those “places to climb before you die” destinations for domestic and international climbers alike.

ARTS

Attitude toward opera, ballet, theatre, etc.
Lots of people go to the theatre, especially around Christmas. Far, far less go to ballet or opera, despite the country’s long and rich history of both. Ballet and opera are funded by the government’s Ministry of the Arts, although they would both tell you they are not funded enough.

MOVIES

Dubbing or subtitles?
Dubbing is popular, but subtitles have been making a comback in recent years.

TELEVISION

TV news, newspapers, & print media
There are six terrestrial channels and about 900 sattelite channels. People still complain that there is nothing on worth watching. News is supposedly free and uncensored, but don’t expect to see anything mentioned if the channel’s owner doesn’t like it.

Magazines and print newspapers are dying out thanks to widespread Internet use.

COMICS

Format
Newspapers used to carry comics on a “comics page” but they are dying out as the newspapers make extensive cutbacks to keep going in the face of the Internet. Comic books are still around but they are mostly foreign imports. Kohlandian comics pretty much died out in the 1970s.

SPORTS

Popular sports
Tennis and football are very popular. There are local football teams and tennis courts are all over the place. You can usually find a golf club or two in each city; and many cities also have a hockey team.

Types of playing cards used
Kohlandians would look at you funny if you showed them anything other than a “traditional” French pack of cards.
[edit_reason]Updated the “race” section to better reflect a change in RP populations.[/edit_reason]

Patriotism is disdained yet all people respect a man or woman that takes pride in the flag that hangs high over the great palace. Royalty is usually denounced but prefixes and suffixes are awarded to outstanding citizens and members of the military for a variety of reasons. Changing names are always left as an option although keeping your surname, if not married, is promoted because it is seen that you would otherwise find your family as a disgrace, unless it is you who is the disgrace.

MIKGONNIAN IMPERIUM

LANGUAGE

Languages spoken in your country
The MikGonnian Imperium has no national language as the nation is heavily multi-lingual. While the people of the country usually speak at least two languages and understand as many as six. The de-facto language of the government is English.

The languages spoken in day to day life:[ul]
[li]English
[li]Lacertae
[li]Dead-tongue
[li]Slash[/li][/ul]
Knowledge of foreign languages
Foreign languages and culture are incorporated into the lives of most occupants in the nation. It is most prevalent in the markets and social areas in the cities with heavy commerce and government.

Facts about your language; speaking distance & directness
Most citizens of the nation do not usually speak various languages when conversing with other citizens as most to all citizens are polyglots, so individuals speak their native tongues which is usually understood between citizens of different races or species. When speaking formally, individuals usually a few feet away from each others faces and look directly at each other when conversing. Informal speech can vary depending on individuals, it can be just as formal speaking or perhaps closer and more indirect. Telepathy is sometimes utilized in certain species or in significant individuals.

NUMBERS

Decimal point
Decimal points are represented as a split vertical line (¦).

System of measurement
The metric system is used for international trade and commerce though in the nation the Luorid systm of measurement is used (1.5cm = ε5¦1).

Definition of a billion
One thousand million.

How date is written & most important dates
The date is written out from the original date of convergence of species (first date where the nations species met and led exodus). Written out as: A-III 1Γ 1036 (A = After Convergence, III = Third Dynasty, 1Γ = day one of the 5th month, 1036 = yr since founding of nation).

Race

Variety of races / attitudes about race & foreigners
MikGonnia was first founded by a triumvirate of species who worked together to lead an exodus from there respective homelands and eventually made there stay in TEP. Because most of their history was lost during the exodus there is almost no memory of a divided/ racially isolated society. This allows society to function with greatly reduced racial tension(except for racial jokes, everyone loves those). The Three founding races are Human - Primate, Baulsk - Reptilian (kinda), and the Kortul - Reptilian/ Invertebrate? Though since it’s creation MikGonnia has become more and more racially diverse, including Vixa (General term for fox/wolf people), Seiba (general term for cybernetic/ artificial/ robotic beings), Foreign races that have immigrated from the surrounding nations, and Karl (A retroactive organic AI that was dug up in a mine, then given a job as the Financial Viceroy).

You make jokes about…
Racial jokes which include those regarding the Kortul as “crop eating bugs” a statement made by a visiting diplomat from Zergis Prime. Another is how green Baulskas walk compared to how blue Baulskas walk. Jokes about deadly diseases and plagues like the one that wiped out 1/2 of the humans on there settlement before they created the triumvirate (One bit of history that survived) are also quite stimulating.

POLITICS

Political parties
There have been a number of large political parties since the creation of the nation (as would be expected from throwing together multiple races of people from completely different area), the parties are as follows:[ul]
[li]Visari - Imperialist party
[li]Red Dragon Party - Communist Party
[li]Elephant Party - Conservative Party
[li]Fatherland Union - Reform Party
[li]Nationalists Party - Isolationists
[li]Worker’s Alliance - Liberal Party
[/li][/ul]
Attitude toward Socialism & Communism
Attitudes toward Socialism and Communism vary between parties and the current economical environment. They tend to gain more support in times of economical upheaval and stagnation but have yet secured any high ranking government positions.

Does the government listen to you?
For the most part yes, but only during a movement will something be done fast, otherwise your best bet is to work with your local officials and work your way up when you have a following. For local always go for local government, though if your issue is much grander then small government has the power to deal with letters and persistence may make your point more noticeable.

Can problems be solved?
Problems can be solved, very quickly too! With the established University of MikGonnia any problem can be thrown into that blender and it will spit up the answer! Besides problems that require scientific research the government issues can also be solved fairly diligently as most political parties are willing to compromise.

If a politician cheats on her/his spouse…
When such occurrences happen it really doesn’t change anything as long as he continues his job correctly. Incidents like these are common with the ever growing problem due to inter-species relations becoming more prominent and the social barriers dividing them being eroded away (or perhaps morphed into a different boundary).

Military involvement with government
The military is under the control of the government, more specifically, the Emperor. Though various generals subordinate under the the military chancellor. both the military chancellor and the emperor discuss military strategies and plans, but the military chancellor executes the plans and makes any in field or immediate decisions that need to be made.

Freedom of speech, patriotism, royalty, changing names, misc.
The Rights of freedom of Speech are held dear as it allows anyone to question anything publicly with legal consequences. Although hate speech and treasonous talk will probably end with you being watched by the government, at least, for a time and a nice beating from locals. Patriotism is a big thing on days that celebrate the country and in more rural areas, though it is usually not huge during the working days of the year. The royalty of the nation are not watched like celebrities but like political officials. They do most of there work for the military but do deal with local affairs when the need arises. They are judged by the work they do and not by there title(at least to most of the public) and can have there royal title denounced by the Emperor. Anyone can change their name though you must go through a tedious bureaucratic system to do this, unless of course it is for your protection under the police(Reidzo).

ECONOMICS

Utilities & companies: public or private

Imports from every country wiling to trade (and some who didn’t agree to the trade) penetrate the deepest regions of the nation. Haggling is the only way not to get ripped off, but haggling is instilled in children heads from a very young age so everyone knows what to expect and how to work people.

Even with a prominent Reidzo presence rime is still an issue in more poverty stricken intercity areas and the darker areas of the harbor. Just travel in a group when you take a walk through the area and you will be fine.

Lawyers
