PRAISE AND FRUSTRATION AT BARVATA FOR DEVELOPING INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Over the last several days the Prime Minister has released separate legal documents detailing that Great Morstaybishlia has successfully entered negotiations with three countries; Zukchiva, the Kurikian Federation and Andorinhões, all of which has, at the minimum, established formal recognition and the exchange of ambassadors. Prime Minister Franklin Barvata revealed to parliament that he wishes to engage in further dialogue with the nations to establish what he says is “vital trade for the future”, as well as detailing dialogue with Andorinhões that would promote the teaching of the Staynish language in their schools and colleges as a learning option.

His party has commended his actions, stating that it is precisely the level of international projection they were expecting from their Prime Minister candidate back in the 2019 General Election and have revealed that there is more progressive international discussions to occur in the near future. But despite this, Leader of the Opposition and Conservative leader Benjamin Wardola and Democrat leader Osbourne Saudaran has condemned these talks as both “distractions” and “ignorance” to the truth. Our political correspondent, Millie Gofsburg is with the Leader of the Opposition today, Millie, over to you.

It has been very tense over these past twenty four hours as peaceful demonstrations have rallied against the Prime Ministers actions just down the street from his residence in 1 Bursil Street. The street is full of frustrated faces, of faces that want reassurance that he will not ‘ignore’ his duties surrounding the civil unrest and local lock-downs within eastern Caltharus. The people here have stated that they want the Prime Minister to really focus in on the internal challenges the country faces rather than nearly completely ignore it. I’m with Leader of the Opposition Benjamin Wardola, Mr Wardola, what do you think?

“I think, as well as the rest of the Conservative Party that Mr Barvata’s actions speak for themselves. In the midst of, lets face it, a national crisis; the Prime Minister has consistently neglected his duties. He should focus most of his attention towards tackling the issues in the region such as the social injustices and the apparent underlining poverty and de-escalating the civil unrest, but rather that needed attention is lost to unimportant international discussions and meetings abroad that he should rather send a cabinet member in his stead. I want to see Mr Barvata act like the Prime Minister that he should be or perhaps members of his party may begin to have the same questions as I and so many others.”

PARLIAMENT PASSES THE CONTROVERSIAL ANTI TERRORISM BILL

Today, Prime Minister Franklin Barvata commanded the Labour Party to sign new law into place - the Anti Terrorism Bill, which aims at giving government more powers to act against groups or people that fall under an umbrella term of terrorism. The Prime Minister has defended allegations against him which believe he is ‘gathering a dangerous amount of executive power which could be used against his political opponents’, rather emphasising that the bill is intended to crack down on suspicious and malicious activity in and around eastern-Caltharus to prevent any further terror incidents.

The bill was met with intense opposition from across the House, with Conservative leader Benjamin Wardola and Democrat leader Osbourne Saudaran leading a coalition in the chamber aimed at preventing the bill from becoming law, with the Democrat leader stating “the bill is a disgrace to an independence ideology”. The Prime Minister responded in his Prime Minister’s Questions stating “Independence ideologies damage the infrastructure of a well established nation like ours, and those who are elected to this chamber yet do not swear allegiance to the King and country are in themselves questionable.”

The new law creates a new group, the Anti-Terrorism Board (ATB), which is composed of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, Chief of the Defence Staff of the Royal Armed Forces of the Empire (RAFOTE) and the Director of the Morstaybishlian Intelligence Bureau (MIB); will have the power to initiate actions against suspected persons or groups that fall under the defined umbrella term of terrorism, and arrest them without warrants.

Six Labour MPs voted against the passing of the Bill, including George Merizanov; MP for Dillgartan and former Secretary of State for Education under the Rothgerus Administration, Anne Lauve; MP for South Lornton, Aegis, Berinter Fokes, MP for North Lornton, Aegis, Concorf Hedlan-Mor; MP for Heolch, Aeternum, Lerluka Veren, MP for Lower Ancadia and Nick Kondarry, MP for Belcaden, Aegis. All of the six MPs who voted against the Bill had the whip removed, or in other words were expelled from the Labour Party. This harsh punishment is not unheard of, in fact the practice is considered normal among incumbent governments wanting to pass important legislation into law. These MPs are still able to attend the House of Representatives as Independents, and some who have been in this situation before have created their own faction. Three of the six MPs that rebelled against the Bill were from the South Staynish city of Aegis.

KING ELDRAS VI MURDERED

MERE MOMENTS AGO on a LIVE broadcast straight from the Alksearian National Television (ANT), a major news broadcaster in Alksearia; footage of the mid-afternoon news flickered before moving to a frame where the Alksearian sovereign King Eldras VI, who had disappeared days before, made his last prayers to a STUNNED audience before being SHOT in the head and MURDERED. The Balistrian government claimed responsibility for the stunt, stating that Eldras VI had committed ‘crimes against democracy’. Following the murder and in real-time, stunned nations from around the world are condemning the actions of Grand Vizier Yuk’kot’um Whit’chest and showing support to Alksearia, including Prime Minister Franklin Barvata, who was awoken from his sleep at his residence in 1 Bursil Street after the tragedy. The Prime Minister is expected to make a short-notice public speech to the nation.

The shot moves to within the media hall of 1 Bursil Street. Moments later the Prime Minister appears.

"What we have learnt this evening is a shock to us all. The murder of a king, a genuine man who sought radical constitutional change in Alksearia, a king who promoted democracy, kindness and compassion among his nation, and a loving father to his three children. The world can be a very peaceful place, but it is in these dark times that we must come together to support each other. Three years ago, when our Crown Prince Thadeus was snatched from this nation, the world supported us and mourned. It is therefore our duty to act the same. Under these immoral circumstances with the unjust killing of King Eldras VI, we must show compassion for their people and join them in their mourning.

But we will not stop there. The Grand Vizier of Balistria did not foresee such a quick reaction from the world. Their target was Alksearia. Their enemy for centuries was Alksearia. But now, after their disgusting and malapert attack, we stand with Alksearia. Great Morstaybishlia will be among the many nations who have, or will do so in the near future, severe all existing ties with Balistria. We have immediately recalled our Ambassador and have condemned these actions as fool-hearty, for a nation with any moral decency would never have undertaken such vile and cruel methods of exerting their ideology.

The King has been informed of this tragic event and will be making a national address at 8AM tomorrow morning. But for now we must show support to the Alksearian government and to the new Queen Dorothea. Thank you, and Thaers’ blessings goodnight."

BARVATA LAUGHS OFF CALL FOR INDEPENDENCE

In this morning’s parliamentary session in Sani Bursil, Member of Parliament for North Lornton Berinter Fokes sought the governments’ approval to hold a referendum for independence in the city of Aegis, in South Staynes on the border with Axdel. Fokes, who had written to Speaker Baron Munchiro beforehand, had outlined that there was a clause in the Aegis Area Agreement of 1975 and 1977 that allowed for Aegis independence from South Staynes. The clause wrote as follows:

“…At any point henceforth, if the Members of Parliament of the outlined constituencies within this agreement unanimously vote to leave, the government of Great Morstaybishlia or any successor governments have to respectfully hold an independence referendum. If a referendum is held that votes to secede from the union, the government of Great Morstaybishlia must work with a provisional government of Aegis and the government of Norograd over an agreed timeframe, no less than one year and no greater than five.”

Prime Minister Franklin Barvata, members of his political party and other members from around the house reacted by laughing at the demand. The Prime Minister then refused to acknowledge the clause that MP Berinter Fokes presented to the House, declaring it “A relic that for a start is signed between Great Morstaybishlia and a nation that no longer exists!”

It is yet unclear the legality of Prime Minister Barvata’s refusal of the document. The document in question, the Aegis Area Agreement of 1975 and 1977 was signed and ratified in both 1975 and 1977 following the integration of South Staynes as a constituent country within Morstaybishlia by Prime Minister Delores Gastrell and President Kiet Narvga of Norograd; though the dated document does not account geopolitical changes with Norograd no longer existing as a nation state following the Norogradian Civil War in 1996. After the morning parliamentary session Berinter Fokes had an interview with Staynish Television (STV) where he told presenter Arran Marles the following: “The refusal from the Prime Minister is a violation of a valid legal document, and in accordance with the law, I will pursue with legal action by presenting the case to the Supreme Court. The MPs of Aegis that unanimously voted for independence will see the referendum take place whether Barvata wants it or not.”

SUPREME COURT: DENIAL OF AEGIS AREA AGREEMENT INDEPENDENCE CLAUSE RULED UNLAWFUL, JUDGES RULE

Minutes ago in Hamlen House, Sani Bursil, the location of the Supreme Court of Justice in Great Morstaybishlia, a panel of twelve of the highest justices from different areas of the MBE voted that it was wrong to deny the enactment of the clause in the Agreement if all the necessary processes were met, which they were.

Prime Minister Franklin Barvata avoiding questions from
the press as he departed 1 Bursil Street to Sani Bursil Royal Palace.

All five MPs who make up the constituency areas outlined in the Aegis Area Agreement had previously voted unanimously for enactment of this clause, in a meeting held by MP Berinter Fokes of North Lornton, Aegis. With this news, it is expected that the Prime Minister will respect the clause in the Agreement and conduct a localised referendum for the five outlined constituencies. The prime minister, who has faced calls to resign, said he “greatly disagreed” with the ruling but would “respect” it on his social media platform. A senior government official said the prime minister is due to speak with the King after the Supreme Court ruling.

People in small numbers have gathered outside of Kalmington Palace, the site of the House of Representatives in the capital in protest of Prime Minister Barvata’s actions after the Supreme Courts’ ruling.

BARVATA FLIES TO ANDEL

Early this morning, reports circulated that Royal Two had departed Sani Bursil for Andel, the capital of Axdelia. Prime Minister Barvata was then spotted leaving the airport in a state vehicle and exiting it minutes ago at the Federal Capitol Building, where he avoided a statement to the press and proceeded in with President Diego Corbinn inside. No press, not even the MBC or the AM were admitted.

There are large speculations as to the prime ministers’ intentions here; yesterday the Supreme Court of Great Morstaybishlia ruled that his denial of the Aegis Area Agreement was unlawful, and later the prime minister responded on his social media claiming that he was going to “respect” the clause…

PRIME MINISTER BARVATA GOES AGAINST THE SUPREME COURT RULING

In a deadly blow to the Aegis independence movement, Prime Minister Franklin Barvata revealed to news broadcasters from across the world mere moments ago the topics that he and the Axdelian President Diego Corbinn covered at their meeting in the Axdelian capital this morning. The left-wing allies mostly spoke about the Aegis Area Agreement, where the two decided to rule out a possibility of Aegis gaining independence as they both agreed the clause in the Agreement was nullified. This was the speech that Prime Minister Franklin Barvata gave only five minutes ago:

“Today, I flew to the capital of Axdel and met with their President, Diego Corbinn at their Federal Capitol Building. I deliberated with Corbinn for some time, covering important details surrounding the Aegis Area Agreement and after that a renewed discussion regarding the Aura-Tarov maglev project. The verdict to the Agreement is quite simple: because the signatory states listed on the most updated version of the clause set out in 1977 are Great Morstaybishlia and Norograd, the latter no longer existing; President Diego Corbinn has agreed that the legitimacy of this Agreement was not met, having found no example where this Agreement was crossed over from Norogradian to Axdelian law and thus both parties have agreed to void the Agreement. Thank you.”

According to Amber Phalyf, the Labour MP from Tary North who was a part of the seven MPs who unanimously voted to hold an independence referendum earlier last week: “This move by our prime minister is causing incredible consternation within politics and our own party. This move will be a challenge to the democratic foundations of this nation and a testament to the ideology of unionism within each constituent country of our nation. We must brace for impact over these successive weeks. Thaer save us all.”

SKIRMISH AT THE THALRIAN-TUVALTASTAN BORDER

Mere minutes ago we are getting reports that a skirmish has occurred at the Marasaur ridge line, on the border of Tuvaltastan and PDR Thalria. From reports on both sides at least twenty soldiers were killed and more injured. Both the governments of Tuvaltastan and Thalria are blaming each other for instigating a skirmish.

Chancellor Alyona Petrovavich has not made an official public statement, but is expected to do so soon. Prime Minister Franklin Barvata has ushered his support, himself releasing a statement on CafeNet alleging that Thalrian troops initiated the attack; but the Prime Minister has sent his own official communications to both Chancellor Petrovavich and Premier Sarinn, with its most important notice reading “Respect the peace on the continent at current time, take immediate actions to alleviate tensions and come to a ceasefire before any more servicemen and women lose their lives.”

CABINET RESIGNATION, TROUBLE FOR BARVATA?

This morning between 09:00 and 10:00 AM twenty nine South Staynish MPs from the Labour Party (MBE) declared in different cities and towns that they were “factionalising” the Labour Party to create a branch solely within South Staynes called Valerian Labour. Their purpose is simple; they wish to advocate for stronger representation within government, they want to establish a national identity called Valeria, the demonym of which would be Valerian; which pays homage to the old kingdom that presided over the lands over eight centuries ago, and there are even talks in the Valerian Labour faction that devolution is being discussed.

The prime minister currently has a parliamentary majority of six, which gives him 904 Labour MPs. This totaled 910 in early last month before the prime minister expelled six MPs from the party for rebelling against legislation. Now Prime Minister Franklin Barvata may face a big problem; 59 Labour MPs from South Staynes have declared their allegiance with the Valerian Labour faction, including the Secretary of State for South Staynes Nellie Hermin who resigned her position from the Cabinet in her address to the public. This faction could sway the balance of power in the current government; they have vowed to only “better South Staynish policies”, which means that they MAY vote against the government if the faction did not agree with anything they try to bring into law.

In the event this faction rebels against the government, the prime minister has three immediate options; he could adhere to the wishes of the faction, he could remove the whip from them; though this would officially place the Barvata administration into a minority position, or he could call for a general election to potentially increase his hold in government, though this could pose a risk for the Labour party’s position in administration. The prime minister himself has declared that “A general election is not on the table”.

Now with the resignation of Nellie Hermin from the Cabinet, the prime minister has to find a replacement for the South Staynes Secretary of State. A snippet from Nellie Hermin’s speech declared the following:

“I am a Valerian, and I will fight for the rights of my people till my last breath, as I have since I was elected in 1986. There is no one else as qualified to represent Valeria to the cabinet than me, and the prime minister knows this, he knows he will not find someone good enough! But I cannot, I just can not represent this nation in the cabinet whilst the blatant ignorance of Barvata controls it! He should resign, effective immediately, for a better, stronger leader!”

In a blink and you’ll miss it moment when the camera angles changed and observed from a corner of the House for a few seconds, it appeared Berinter Fokes was playing a shooting game from his PrimPhone as he was zooming in on a target in some crosshairs. People have swarmed his social media platforms with hashtags like #INSENSITIVE, #CANCELFOKES and #CRUELFOKES.

Whilst the North Lornton MP has not made a public statement in regards to the controversy, it comes only a few months after the two fatal terror attacks in July and August, which combined claimed a total of 144 lives; and the riots in Nocturne which claimed the lives of 37 people. Several MPs including the Conservative and Democrat leaders Benjamin Wardola and Osbourne Saudaran have condemned Mr Fokes, but Prime Minister Franklin Barvata has not made a public statement during his visit with Prime Minister Arngrímur Sigurdarson of Lokania.

INNOCENT WOMAN IS KILLED IN PEACEFUL PROTEST

South Staynish woman Fi Praxton was killed minutes ago by metropolitan police in a peaceful protest in Aegis promoting the rights and freedoms of the South Staynish people as a part of the larger Valerian movement. Reports have indicated that she was detained by police and died as a result. Our political editor to Aegis was near the scene when it happened, he has more for us, Lewin Ruboe, over to you.

“Yes that’s right, the atmosphere on the ground here in Aegis is absolutely astonishing. You would not believe that only twelve minutes ago crowds were moving through these streets with calm and decorum. I was here interviewing a local man when it exploded into chaos, quite literally. First it was shouting and then screaming, and within seconds there were people running left right and centre, knocking into each other and fleeing Anchor Street which is a block away. People then began screaming that someone had been tasered and for a few minutes there was huge confusion in the crowd. That tension was reminiscent of the rioting in Nocturne earlier this year,” the political editor paused as a youth photo-bombed the camera, “Now we hear from a paramedic to the scene that this woman who was tasered by police died suddenly, probably from cardiac arrest though it’s not exactly clear,” the editor was scuffled by someone running past, “Within less than a minute these peaceful crowds burst into retaliation, throwing food and barging with police who are now deployed with riot shields. Police are making dozens of arrests here now as things seem to just be escalat-” the editor was suddenly interrupted, “FUCK OFF BACK TO STAYNES!” another youth shouted before he smashed the camera with something in his hand.

We’ve lost contact with our political editor Lewin Ruboe. If you didn’t hear from our political editor it appears that the death of Fi Praxton is perhaps as a result of a taser accident. She was just 36 when she died. No politician has made a statement on these tensions yet. More on this story as it develops…

PRIME MINISTER ADDRESSES NATION

“Peaceful protest embodies the core ideals of a strong, structured democracy. Peaceful protests have made real change; from those in 1917 which saw the monarchy hand over its right to absolutism, from the peaceful protests in the 1920s advocating for women’s rights, from those in the 60s and 70s advocating for multi-species rights and those across our former colonies and territories which campaigned for independence; they work. They are the essence and lifeline of stability and can tell you a lot about the government by their reaction, a reaction which can be the breaking or making of a nation. Of course, His Majesty’s Government promotes peaceful protest in a civil and orderly manner, and where possible, may implement changes based on peaceful protest.

Unfortunately, not all peaceful protests remain peaceful nor do all protests begin peacefully. We have already experienced that this year, where people took to the streets of Fort Nocturne, Stalzag and Relsche within Nocturne Province to protest against the Governments’ implementation of Black Alert following the horrific and malicious July 2020 Caltharus attacks. It is truly a burden on society when people are killed at the hands of another, but alas; we mourned and we as a people overcame it.

Yesterday morning marked the third consecutive day that members of the public took to the street and organised with local authorities to conduct peaceful protest and awareness marches promoting the ideals that were set forth by fellow Labour MP and former Secretary of State for South Staynes Nellie Hermin, advocating for a more represented South Staynes, a devolved government for South Staynes and the restoration of a national identity: Valeria.

At approximately 09:45, a part of these peaceful protests broke into violence in Abberon Square and its nearby streets, initially beginning as a scuffle between two police officers and a drunken youth, but escalated as friends of the youth, who can not be named for legal reasons, began shoving and acting uncivilly towards our police officers. In the commotion a young lady called Fi Praxton was unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was confused as one of these youths as they fell onto a police officer. An asthmatic lady, she reached for her inhaler from within her handbag, but an officer confused the object she produced with a handgun and after telling the lady to stop, fired a taser round to immobilise her.

Fi Praxton was arrested and later given medical treatment where an attending paramedic team pronounced her dead on arrival to Aegis Infirmary. Medical professionals ruled her death as cardiac arrest caused by the taser round. Her death was not out of police anger or brutality, but out of the professional mechanisms police officers take in situations. Her death was a tragedy, and I as well as my government are truly mournful. But our remarks are seemingly not enough.

Violent rioting broke out from these peaceful protests and police officers have made haste in the arrests of over a hundred people. Thankfully nobody has been killed as a result but dozens have been injured including nine police officers. One, PC Arran Smitley was rushed to hospital with a fractured tibia as a result of a brick that was launched from the crowd. These violent protests do not resolve quarrels, nor do they help the situation, and that is why I urge people to lay down their hostilities before any more people are hurt, or worse, killed.

I have invited an independent inquiry to be held regarding the death of Fi Praxton. Nobody involved will be unaccounted for, and if there is any malicious intent, they will be held accounted for. Thank you.”

FIRE SERVICES TACKLE GROWING WILDFIRES IN THE GREAT SAVANNA

This summer season has brought very low rain precipitation over much of the Staynish interior, though despite the droughts being the worse in over seven years with over 1,339 fires burning down more than 2,491 square kilometers of[sup] [/sup] bush land, forests and 920 homes, the prime minister has commended the fire services and police forces for taking fast, appropriate action.

Despite this, one fast-moving wildfire has triggered evacuation orders for over 25,000 people in primarily rural areas of the Great Savanna, in Redrugan and Jersia Provinces of Staynes. The unusually dry conditions and fast winds have seen the wildfires engulf an area of over 51 square kilometers, devastating farmland and homes in its vicinity; but whilst the fire rages there are no conclusive reports of structural damage and lost of life at this time.

This wildfire season in Staynes alone has caused over ♅2.39 billion in damages, the second-costliest so far in the 21st century.

News at Three:

MORE FIRE SERVICES ARE CALLED TO THE FIRES IN STAYNES

Firefighters and more police roadblocks and traffic stops are being enforced across much of rural Staynes in the Redrugan and Jersia Provinces, amidst growing wildfires there which have been burning for days. The biggest fire has prompted an evacuation order for over 25,000 people as it engulfs more than 93 square kilometers of farmland, forest and property.

The prime minister has called for a further evacuation of 6,400 people as southerly winds have changed the direction of growth of the fire, and with many hamlets and villages under threat it is no doubt going to cause millions more in property damage. Burtefort is a market town and the closest town to the wildfires. Until now they were assumed safe but residents here are concerned that their town, which lies 65 km south-east of the raging fires may be evacuated. If the fires continue southwards, the prime minister will no doubt be forced to evacuate another fifteen thousand people.

CARTELS IN JORALESIA; A THING OF THE PAST?

Cartels emerged in Joralesia in the aftermath of the Auroran Imperial War, where Morstaybishlia continued to decolonise with Lokania, Ruxalara, Justelvard and eventually Atiland gaining their independence. Morstaybishlia suffered an economic crisis after the war and Joralesia’s economy plummeted. With little money to allocate in crime prevention, subjugating smuggling and the rise of domestic terrorism, gangs and cartels thrived and the black market boomed.

The Rothgerus administration was the first administration to truly begin tackling these problems, but many underlining problems had become ubiquitous. When Morstaybishlia faced problems at home, these problems reaffirmed themselves. It was only until Johannes came into office that cartel activity declined. With funding for constant police raids, military checkpoints, undercover agents and other methods, cartel activity began to decline. Police raids and operations closed many smuggling operations trafficking cocaine, cannabis and other drugs that were illegal in Joralesia to a street value of over ♅4 billion in less than ten years.

It’s needless to say that in the fourteen years (2005-2019) that Johannes was prime minister, the administration in Sani Bursil put a large stop to much of the crime underworld in Joralesia, though of course drug and weapons seizures continue to this day under the Barvata administration.

It was only three days ago that drug enforcement officers seized a haul of illicit drugs from the basement of a property in Burdels, a city on the west coast of New Staynes Province. It came after enforcement agents were investigating a large scale drug trafficking organisation with ties to the Blackpaw Cartel in Burdels’ Lower District area, allegedly involved in the transportation and delivery of large quantities of drugs. The bust seized cocaine and crystal meth with a street value of over ♅115 million.

Members of the Conservative Party, including Leader of the Opposition Benjamin Wardola has prompted that the prime minister allocate greater resources to clamp down on the crime underworld that has plagued Joralesia for so long.

BARVATA AND SAROHART EXTEND DEAL

This morning, Prime Minister Franklin Barvata invited the Vothetrian Prime Minister Clauzia Sarohart to Sani Bursil to discuss and extend the Ocean Access Deal. The two prime ministers put pen to paper at four minutes past noon and signed a two year extension of the deal, which sees the Vothetrian government pay a sum of 1.5 billion KRB per annum for the use of the Ider River, and merchant access to three port cities on Caltharusian soil.

The deal, which gives vessels from Vothetria the right to the open ocean, was designed to allow Vothetrian trade onto two platforms, by air and by sea. It has brought relative success to the Vothetrian economy. Over the past one and a half years, Barvata invested the additional 1.5 billion Kiribs to the education sector. It primarily targeted primary schools who teach pupils age 4 to 11. It was awarded the money in the form of subsidies, with clear guidance to where primary schools should allocate it, such as on stationary equipment, on funding for more disability support staff and keeping the cost of school meals down for parents, for schools within Caltharus.

Though not amended for this two year renewal of the deal, in a report with the MBC, a political spokesperson revealed that Clauzia Sarohart advocated for use of the Ider River in the renewal deal to be for both the merchant fleet and a naval fleet. It is unclear why Miss Sarohart requested this, as Vothetria has no current standing ocean-faring navy due to being landlocked, though it does operate a small fleet of three missile boats on the Ider River that were commissioned after the war by the Matriarchy of Ethalria in the 1970s.
