Given some discussions in #delegate-elections on Discord and our recent forum move to Discourse, I figure it’s time to update this long-standing Act.
Wording is inspired by TSP’s “The Times Act”, Preamble taken from the existing Standard Time Act
Original Draft
PREAMBLE
WHEREAS the region of the East Pacific covers many different time zones; and,
WHEREAS Universal Coordinated Time is a widely used time standard and therefore of most practical value to the region; and,
SEEKING to avoid confusion in the time used in communications; whilst,
ACKNOWLEDGING the purpose and longevity of the original Standard Time Act.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE MAGISTERIUM OF THE EAST PACIFIC
SECTION I. CITATION & DEFINITIONS
This Act shall be known and cited as “The Standard Date Time Act”.
For the purposes of this Act, “TEP Forums” is outlined in Section 2.2 of The Regional Services and Securty Act .
SECTION II. OFFICIAL TIME STANDARD
The official timezone for the East Pacific shall be Universal Coordinated Time, also known by the abbreviation UTC.
The official date format for the East Pacific shall be the “Discourse standard”, defined as YYYY-MM-DD
YYYY-MM-DD is comprised of the following:
a). YYYY is defined as the Year; ie 2023.
b). MM is defined as the Month; ie 02.
c). DD is defined as the Day; ie 07.
All date-timestamps posted on the TEP Forums used to define legal deadlines must use the Discourse-native “date” code functionality.
Examples of compliant date-time codes are displayed in Appendix A.
SECTION III. EXEMPTIONS
The provisions of this Act do not preclude or prevent the usage of any other timezone or date-time measurement system for non-official purposes.
SECTION IV. ENACTMENT
Upon enactment of this Act, the Standard Time Act shall be repealed in it’s entirety.
Appendix A - Example of Compliant Date & Time Codes
Individual date & time: [date=2023-02-07 time=11:30:00 format="LLLL z" timezone="UTC"]
Date & time range: [date-range from=2023-01-07T11:30:00 to=2023-01-07T11:30:00 format="LLLL z" timezone="UTC"]
my main sugestion is to not reference the section # in the regional services act, because that way we dont have to deal with renaming sections everytime a section number is changed
otherwise looks good i think, although the preamble probably isnt nessecary for our laws anymore seeing as most of our laws dont use them

Removed the section reference and preamble from the draft.

Very happy with this. Sidenote not that it would matter but UTC is the only sensible universal time solution; I mean that’s what it’s called
Reminder that this exists.
