BLCTV CORP DEFENDS REMOVAL OF SUBTITLES, CEO LABELS VIEWERS DEPENDENT ON SUBTITLES AS STUPID.
BLCTV Corp CEO Long Wei has defended the channel’s decision to remove subtitles for all programmes.
From 9th June, BLCTV Corp has removed the long running feature of having Chinese subtitles in all of their programmes. Deaf advocacy groups have voiced concerns that hearing-impaired individuals will suffer especially children who rely on subtitles as an important learning tool.
But Mr Long made a bizarre rant online, claiming that subtitles makes people more stupid by not sacrificing their hearing skills. He has stated that his decision is final.
“Let me say this plainly, and I won’t apologize for the clarity: subtitles are making people stupid. Yes, stupid. I said it, and I’ll say it again until it echoes through every living room. If you can’t watch a program without needing the words spoon-fed to you at the bottom of the screen, you’re not watching—you’re just pretending to participate in culture. You’re clinging to training wheels like they’re part of the bicycle. People tell me, ‘But Mr. Long, I can’t understand without subtitles!’ And I tell them, ‘Then maybe it’s time you learned to listen instead of reading your way through life like it’s a coloring book.’ Subtitles have turned our audience into passive, distracted readers. You’re not absorbing the drama, the nuance, the art. We spend months crafting every syllable and all you do is read it flatly like a shopping list. Pathetic. If you want to read something, go to a library. Read a novel. Annotate a poem. But don’t come to my network expecting television to wear training pants. So yes! We are removing subtitles from our original programming. You will listen, or you will leave. This isn’t a daycare. This is BLCTV Corp, and we are in the business of speech, not babysitting literacy. To those who feel personally attacked: good. That means you heard me.”
